No clash between India,China to up stakes in Tajikistan, says Ansari

Vice-President Hamid Ansari Wednesday said there was no clash between India and China to increase their stakes in Tajikistan as both nations were assisting the country in their own way

Vice-President Hamid Ansari Wednesday said there was no clash between India and China to increase their stakes in Tajikistan as both nations were assisting the country in their own way.

On his way back to New Delhi after concluding his four-day visit to Dushanbe,Ansari said India focused on capacity building, human resource development and providing IT training to Tajik students among other activities.

Ansari answered in negative when asked if Tajikistan wanted more assistance from India given that China gives much more. An MP who was part of Indias official delegation had told The Indian Express that Tajikistan did ask for more assistance.

There are no problem areas in the relationship between New Delhi and Dushanbe, Ansari said while describing the official talks as productive and substantial.

There were small gestures but in international diplomacy they are significant, he said and added that the special relationship between the two countries that began with the fifth visit of the President of Tajikistan in September 2012 had become strategic.

The main purpose of his visit was to follow up on the commitment made during that visit and to raise the relationship to higher level and on both counts the visit was a success, said Ansari, the first vice-president to visit Tajikistan.

He said Dushanbe wanted more investment from India but listed connectivity as a major worry. India has already taken up the issue of direct flights between the two countries.
