The Government may have worked hard to get the National Investigation Agency Act passed by Parliament, but the babus at the Home Ministry failed to anticipate that funds would have to be made available for the agency. So,the new NIA chief,R V Raju, has to operate out of a temporary office that used to be an operations room in North Block. Since he will be working with an initial team of nine to 10 officers, about Rs 50 lakh has been sought to pay salaries for the next three months. For the next budget,a few crores may be sought, but the details are still sketchy as the NIA doesn’t have the required staff to do the brainstorming and put out proposals for financial approval.
