NHRC issues notice to Chhattisgarh on eye camp

The NHRC has sought specific information on the health status of each of the 334 patients who were operated upon.

Taking suo motu cognizance of The Indian Express report 1 dead,25 blind in one eye,many in hospital month after surgery at camp,published on October 17,the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday issued notice to the Chhattisgarh Chief Secretary,seeking a report

from the government within four weeks.

The NHRC has sought specific information on the health status of each of the 334 patients who were operated upon. The commission has also sought information on the kind of medical aid being administered to the victims by the state government now.

The Commission has observed that if the contents of the report are true,its a serious violation of human rights of the farmers who became victims of gross negligence of the doctors who performed these surgeries, said the NHRC in a statement.

The Indian Express had reported that a woman had died,while 25 lost their vision in one eye and over 25 others were facing the same fate a month after surgery at a cataract operation camp conducted by the government in Balod,Durg on September 29.
