A sitting judge of the Supreme Court was assassinated in the capital on Thursday.
Justice Rana Bahadur Bam (64) was shot by an unidentified assailant, riding pillion on a motorbike, near the UN Park in Lalitpur area. He was rushed to the NORVIC Hospital where he was declared dead.
Bam was on his way to the court when his car was sprayed with bullets by the assailants. Justice Boms bodyguard and a companion were also wounded.
The fatal attack on the judge,at a time when the Supreme Courts activism on cases of political nature has triggered debate in favour and against in the country, leaves the judiciary terrorised, although Justice Bom was no way involved in any of the controversial cases. Maoist militants, during years of insurgency had unsuccessfully targeted Keshav Upadhyay ,then Chief Justice of the Supreme court in Western Nepal about a decade ago,but no judge had been physically harmed.
We have recovered the motorbike used by the assailants, but we are yet to identify the culprits, police said.
PM Baburam Bhattarai and Chief Justice Khilraj Regmi visited the hospital soon after the incident.
