As part of the power sharing agreement between the National Conference (NC) and the Congress, the two have decided that the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly will be from the NC while the Chairman of the Legislative Council will mostly be from the Congress.

Speaking with The Indian Express,NC patron,Farooq Abdullah, said,“ the pro-tem speaker from Congress will change and instead the Speaker will be from the

National Conference.”

While many leaders of the NC were eyeing the Speaker’s seat,Abdullah, the party’s caretaker President, said that the party had not yet decided on the candidate for the post.

However, even as the NC gets the Speaker’s post, sources said that since the Congress had more numbers in the Legislative Council the Chairman of the Upper House is likely to be from the party.

Abdullah, however, denied that any agreement regarding the Council seats had been reached with the Congress.

In the Legislative Council three seats have fallen vacant due to the retirement of Congress’,Farida Mir and Independent Sofi Ghulam Mohammad and the death of PDP rebel and Independent candidate from Beerwah,Bilal Lodhi.

Four more seats are also falling vacant due to the election to the Lower House of three PDP MLCs,Nizamudin Bhat,Basharat Bukhari and Rafi Ahmed Mir and NC MLC,Sakina Ittoo.

There was also no agreement between the two parties about the total number of seats they will contest in the coming Lok Sabha polls. Abdullah said,“ As of now we have not reached any agreement over the number of seats each of the parties will contest for the Lok Sabha polls as there is still time left for it. We will decide before April when the Lok Sabha polls are scheduled to be held,” he said.
