Nandi attack: Accused MLA makes hospital his ‘home’

For last 24 days,Samajwadi Party MLA who is supposed to be in jail,has made hospital his home.

For the last 24 days,Samajwadi Party legislator Vijay Mishra,who is supposed to be in jail in a murder case,has made a private ward of the Balrampur Hospital here his home.

Mishra occupies two rooms in the hospital’s private ward,one for himself and the other for the policemen who are supposed to keep a watch on him.

Doctors say he is suffering from hypertension,diabetes and cervical spondylitis. But Mishra meets visitors,goes to the Assembly every morning and returns to the hospital only in the evening. And he has a private vehicle to ferry him around.

Vijay Mishra,who is MLA from Sant Ravidas Nagar,once carried a reward of Rs 2.5 lakh on his head. He is an accused in the 2010 case of a bomb attack on the then minister Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi’ in Allahabad,in which The Indian Express staffer Vijay Pratap Singh was fatally wounded.


Mishra evaded arrest for almost seven months before he was arrested by the UP Special Task Force from South Delhi in February,2011. He was lodged in Meerut jail.

After the SP government’s formation,he was shifted to Allahabad’s Naini jail. He has several relatives in Allahabad.

After some time,he complained of pain in his left hand. The jail doctor sent a letter to S R N Medical College in Allahabad,requesting him to send a neurologist for a check-up. The hospital replied that the neurologist had gone on one month’s leave. Meanwhile,the jail authorities received a letter from the Principal Secretary of the Vidhan Sabha,informing that the Assembly session would start on May 28 and to ensure his presence.

Mishra was then sent to the Lucknow jail with a recommendation by the Naini jail doctor for his examination at Lucknow.

On May 27 evening,Mishra reached the Lucknow jail and spent the night there. The next morning,he left the jail to go to the hospital and to attend the Assembly session. He got admitted in Balrampur Hospital.

Dr I Saran,Chief Medical Superintendent of Balrampur Hospital,said,“Mishra is being treated for hypertension,diabetes and cervical spondylitis.’’
