Civil society groups in Nagaland on Thursday defied a diktat issued by the powerful National Socialist Council of Nagalim (IM)-NSCN(IM),and registered a strong protest against illegal and multiple “taxation” imposed by various underground groups. They asked the state government to constitute a high-level committee to look into the matter.

A public rally held in Dimapur, despite a strong message from the NSCN(IM) against holding it,also appealed to the people to pay “tax” to only one government and not to various groups as has been the case for so many years now. The rally was organised under the aegis of Action Committee Against Unabated Taxation that has been creating public opinion against illegal “taxation” for nearly a year now.

The public rally also asked the government to set up a high-powered panel preferably headed by a retired Supreme Court judge or a sitting High Court judge to go into the entire gamut of multiple and illegal taxation going in Nagaland.
