NAC recommends occupational health and safety policy

The recommendations come as the government’s ‘tenure is about to end and fresh Lok Sabha polls are to be held in summer.

The government should constitute a task force to develop a National Occupational Health and Safety Policy that recognizes the need of India’s workforce and reflects the realities, the Sonia Gandhi-led NAC has recommended.

The recommendations come as the government’s ‘tenure is about to end and fresh Lok Sabha polls are to be held in summer.

In its recommendations put up for consultation on December 17,the NAC working group on ‘Occupational Health and Safety of Workers in India’ said the Ministry of Labour and Employment must convene a task force with representatives drawn from ministries and sectors pertinent to the workforce, particularly Hea-lth and Family Welfare,Agriculture,Mines, and Women and Child Development.

The advisory body has recommended integrating Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) with primary healthcare and Universal Health Coverage (UTC),pointing out that OHS services are not easily available and detection and screening remain inadequate. It stre-ssed developing a database on occupational health and safety by investing in research and other agencies, collecting this data at the state and central levels.

The premise of the working group was to look into OHS-related issues of workers, particularly informal sector workers and women workers.
