My priority law and order, governance,no vendetta: Akhilesh

At 38,Akhilesh will be the youngest CM of UP when he takes charge on March 15.

Marking a generational shift in Uttar Pradesh politics,Akhilesh Yadav, who scripted his party’s return to power in Lucknow, was today elected leader of the SP legislature party. At 38,he will be the youngest Chief Minister of the state when he takes charge on March 15.

Minutes after his name was proposed by senior party leader Azam Khan and supported by Shivpal Yadav,Akhilesh, son of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, promised good governance and warned that “no callousness in law and order will be tolerated”.

He warned SP workers that if they are found indulging in acts of hooliganism, they will be thrown out of the party — there have been several incidents of violence, allegedly involving SP workers, after the election results came in.

“By doing our work with full honesty,we can take UP on the road to development. Our priority is to provide good governance and relief to all sections of society. It is possible only if we perform our work with honesty and dedication,” Akhilesh said.

Sending a clear message to the rank and file of babudom, the CM-designate said: “Those officers who are honest will be given postings while others will be booked. No laxity will be tolerated… we have issued instructions that no callousness in law and order will be tolerated. It has to be maintained, and officials should not hesitate in taking stern action.”

“People rose above religion and caste while voting for us. We will take into consideration the interests of all sections of society. Farmers, weavers,Muslims, youths and every other section will be taken care of by the government. We have promised welfare schemes for everyone in our election manifesto and these will be implemented in true letter and spirit,” he said.

Allaying fears of rival political parties,he said: “There is no space for political vendetta. We have made it clear that parks, memorials and statues constructed during the previous regime will not be demolished. I again reiterate it.” But he said there is enough place in these memorials which can be put to better use. “Hardly anyone visits these memorials, the vacant space can be put to better use,say a hospital.”

Soon after being elected leader of the SP legislature party at its headquarters,Akhilesh, accompanied by Azam Khan,Shivpal Yadav and Ambika Choudhary, met Governor B L Joshi and presented a list of MLAs. Joshi formally invited him to form the government.

“The swearing-in ceremony will be held between 11 am and 1 pm on March 15. The venue has not yet been decided but we will let you know soon,” Akhilesh said. Some party officials said it could be held at the La Martiniere College grounds instead of the Raj Bhawan.

Azam Khan ruled out the possibility of becoming the Speaker. “I will serve as a Minister and will not be Speaker,” he said.

Newly elected SP MLAs trooped into the party office. Sultanpur Sadar MLA Arun Kumar Verma, who at 25 is one of the youngest legislators, said: “It is my first (legislature party) meeting and I am very excited about it.”

Tej Narain Pandey alias Pawan Pandey, who defeated the BJP in Ayodhya, said: “My Ram Rajya will be based on the principles of Gandhiji and Lohia.”

Also present were the son and nephew of slain dacoit Dadua,Veer Kumar and Ram Kumar, and Independent MLA Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiyya.
