After a dormant decade, the husky voiced Smooth operator girl is back with some poignant tunes in her sixth studio record Soldier of Love. The British-Nigerian singer-songwriter Sade Adu is in her piquant element here, with some compelling melodies that are slightly darker than those in her earlier,radio-friendly,upbeat albums Diamond Life and Promise.

Sade, the band, continues with its R&B music that varies from slow jams to sophisti-pop jazz and soul. Alluring vocals rent through the opener The Moon and the sky, which sets the tone for the album. There are some feisty songs, like the title track that stands apart with its assaulting percussion,hip-hopish elements and distorted power chords. Andrew Hale’s numinous piano piece wades through the slow-paced Morning bird with Sade pouring out her heart-ache vocals. And there are some riveting tunes such as Bring me home.

Soldier of Love is a fitting comeback for the singer with a unique voice.
