A murder convict, who is also an undertrial in several cases, gave a police party the slip on March 30. He was being taken to a court in Bathinda,Punjab, from Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

Baljinder,43,is a resident of Khatrai Kalan village in Amritsar district. He was being taken to Bathinda in connection with a case registered against him at Bathinda Kotwali Police Station under section 460 of the IPC. He is said to be facing trial in about 50 cases under various sections of the IPC in Punjab,Haryana and New Delhi.

“Baljinder escaped in the wee hours on March 30 when the police party accompanying him went to sleep on their way to Bathinda from New Delhi on a train,” GRP assistant sub inspector Ramphal, posted at Jakhal, told The Indian Express.

In Amritsar,Jhaner SHO Chanan Singh said once a Special Police Officer with the Punjab Police,Baljinder had taken to “loots and robberies and was known as a notorious person in the village”. He,however, said he had no record that showed Baljinder’s affiliation with any terrorist outfit.

In New Delhi,Deputy Commissioner of Police Parvez Ahmed said,“An Inquiry into the matter is on. Six personnel were suspended after the incident. We are not sure whether he was a Babbar Khalsa International terrorist, but he is a murder accused”.
