Mumbai Police officers investigating the deaths of Rehab and Rameez Chougle are studying the call records of the siblings’ parents, who were last seen four days ago.

Police have not yet begun a search for Gayasuddin Chougle and his wife Farzana, and expect them to return. On Wednesday, police found the family’s apartment in Versova locked. A watchman reported having seen the couple leaving with their bags three days earlier.

Rameez Chougle,25,a homeopathic doctor, and his sister Rehab (27),an engineer, were rushed to hospital on July 4 after they fell unconscious at their home.

Rameez died the same day; Rehab on July 6. Autopsy reports said the siblings were severely dehydrated, which police initially said was the result of inhaling toxic fumes after pest control in the apartment.

The report of Rehab’s stomach wash at CritiCare Hospital was analysed by forensic experts, who detected traces of aluminium phosphide, used as a rodenticide. It was found that one Rukhshar Almekar had, during pest control at the Chougle home on July 3,used aluminium phosphide tablets. A grey powder found in a cupboard in the siblings’ room was also found to be aluminium phosphide.

On July 13,police arrested Almekar for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and, based on her statement, picked up chemical store owner H M Shah, who led them to Pune-based wholesaler Piyush Paraikh.

“We will record the statements of the parents… We have not begun a search for the parents so far,” Pratap Dighavkar,DCP (zone 9),said. An officer from Versova police station said it was strange that the family had “disappeared”. “Their mobile phones are switched off. We have obtained call data records…”
