Accused of targeting only junior employees,the Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta Police on Thursday swooped down on Health Director A N Mittal,its most high-profile raid in recent times,and unearthed assets in excess of Rs 50 crore.
The raid at Mittals posh house in Bhopal yielded Rs 38 lakh in cash and gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 85 lakh.
Besides bank balance of Rs 34 lakh,the officials stumbled upon euros,US and Australian dollars and Thai bahts apart from expensive electronic gadgets and personal accessories. A bank locker,opened in the evening,yielded jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh. Mittal owns 50 acre land in Satgadhi on the outskirts of Bhopal which is valued in crores.
Placed under suspension after the raid,Mittal told the raiding party that he had purchased the land in 2004 when the prices were very low.
Drawing a monthly salary of Rs 90,000,Mittal could not explain the presence of cash recovered from medicine boxes in his bed. Spread over 1800 sq feet,the plush interiors of his house left the raiding party surprised.
