More deaths,CM says Assam a volcano

Kokrajhar: Three shot down with AK-47s in attack on village,toll up to 73; Gogoi seeks CBI probe

Assam is sitting on a volcano,Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said today,as fresh deaths were reported from violence-hit Kokrajhar district,with three people killed late last night.

A group of 10-12 miscreants attacked village Ranighuli,barely 10 km from the district headquarters,with AK-47s at around 10.30 last night,leaving Hasinru Ali 30,Sofiel Rahman 26 and Asmat Ali 22 dead and two persons injured. Kokrajhar SP Sunil Kumar said they also tried to attack another village but were chased away by Assam Police personnel.

Of the 73 dead so far since violence began in the four affected districts on July 20,only five persons from the minority community have died of bullet injuries. As many as 61 have been hacked to death,including Muslims,Bodos,Bengali Hindus. Six were killed in police firing.

As the All Bodoland Muslim Students Union tried to take out a procession to Kokrajhar with the three bodies,the authorities imposed a curfew in the entire district. The union then took the bodies to Dhubri and blocked National Highway 31.

SP Kumar said they had received reports of miscreants from Ranighuli village setting houses afire in some Bodo villages in adjoining areas two weeks ago. This looks like a retaliatory attack, he said.

Assam is just like a volcano. You dont know what happens where, Gogoi said at a press conference in Guwahati. Clashes keep occurring in the state,whether in Kokrajhar,Karbi Anglong or Dima Hasao.

He said he had recommended to the Centre that a CBI probe should be ordered into the violence as the state had limited intelligence capabilities.
