Veteran journalist MJ Akbar has quit India Today after a stint of around two years. October 31 will be his last day at the magazine. He will,however,continue to edit The Sunday Guardian,the weekly newspaper he launched in February,2010 partly with his own investment even though he sold off his stake in the venture over a month ago to Good Morning India Pvt Ltd,a publishing company owned by prominent Congress leader Venod Sharma. The Sharmas also have interest in broadcast business through Information TV India Pvt Ltd,and had also acquired news channel INX earlier this year.
Akbar refused to divulge his future plans. He said,I have a good relationship with Aroon (Purie,the chairman of Living Media Group that publishes India Today). I am leaving on positive terms. Akbar served as the editorial director of India Today and Headlines Today,the news channel owned by the group.
Akbar refuted the buzz that he will also lead INX after quitting India Today. He,however,is likely to be involved in an advisory role,sources said. Sharma also refused to divulge any details. All I can say is he continues to run The Sunday Guardian for us.
