In an apparent attempt to rest the controversy over his remarks suggesting that Nobel-winner Amartya Sen be stripped of his Bharat Ratna,BJPs Rajya Sabha MP Chandan Mitra Friday expressed regret saying he overstated it but stuck to his stand against Sens economic policy outlook for the country. I think I may have exaggerated. I do regret the part about taking away of Bharat Ratna from Dr Sen,I overstated it, Mitra said.
The regret comes after the BJP made it clear that it did not endorse his demand and clarified that Mitras remarks about stripping Sen of Bharat Ratna were his personal views not subscribed by the party.
Mitra asserted his regret was not an apology and added that he has not withdrawn his other remarks against Sens policy prescription. I have not withdrawn rest of my comments and am not apologising for them. I have expressed regret only regarding Bharat Ratna part, Mitra said.
Mitra in a series of tweets had described Sen of being a has-been economist peddling Congresss political economic view to the citizens. Please Dr Sen,dont peddle your unsolicited comments on India. We now know you as a has-been economist who sells Congress line for a living, he had said.
