Activists of some Hindu groups Wednesday night held up a train between Bangalore and Kannur for over an hour and forced out 96 passengers they suspected of being illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
Police sources said the activists, including of ABVP,held up the Yesvanthpur-Kannur Express at Mandya station,90 km from Bangalore, and forced the passengers to disembark. The train left Bangalore at 8.10 pm. It was stopped around 10 pm by them on the basis of information that a large number of Bangladeshi immigrants was traveling to Mangalore, a railway police source said.
The police later found out that the passengers suspected to be illegal immigrants were actually workers from West Bengal,Orissa,Bihar and Rajasthan, who were contracted to work in construction projects in Mangalore. They had valid work identity cards and we summoned their employers who verified the identities and the workers were released, an official in the railway police said.
