Missing midwife: Cops now suspect gangster

The controversy surrounding Bhawari Devi’s disappearance has got murkier, with the police now suspecting that a known gangster from Jodhpur,Shahabuddin Khan, might have been behind her abduction. However, the police are yet to determine the motive behind her kidnapping and who might have ordered it.

Devi,an Auxilliary Nurse Midwife posted in Jodhpur, disappeared on September 1 after reports that she had a CD allegedly containing a video of Rajasthan minister Mahipal Maderna and her in a “compromising position”.

While the police have arrested Sohan Lal Bishnoi,a government contractor considered close to Maderna,in connection with her disappearance, they believe Bishnoi did not have the means to abduct Devi and hired Shahabuddin. A known history-sheeter also facing murder charges,Shahabuddin is believed to have recruited three more persons to abduct Devi and may have managed to take her out of the state.

With raids on Shahabuddin’s house in Jodhpur providing few clues, the police have announced a reward for information on the suspect.

The police believe Devi was kidnapped as the CD was being used for political blackmail. Senior police officials said Devi,Bishnoi and Khan had an extra mobile phone they used to stay in touch. “We have not determined the need for such secrecy amongst the three of them yet,” a police official said.

The state would hand over the probe to the CBI.
