Ten days after Congress legislator Rumi Nath went missing her husband Rakesh Singh has alleged she was kidnapped it has emerged that she might have eloped with her lover.
Local media reports said Nath has revealed on her Facebook page that she has married Zakir Hussain,27,an employee in the social welfare department whom she reportedly met through Facebook. She has also reportedly changed her name to Rebia Sultana.
I want to clarify that I was not under any compulsion to convert to Islam and marry my friend Zakir. I am staying willingly with my husband Zakir, the reports quoted Nath as saying on Facebook.
The marriage took place on April 13,the reports claimed, and it was solemnised by two qazis arranged by Assam minister Siddique Ahmed.
Before she went missing,Nath had rubbished reports by local TV channels about her marriage with Hussain but on May 25 she reportedly circulated video clippings confirming the wedding. Nath,32,has a two-year-old daughter with Rakesh.
The police have nothing to do with her reported second marriage. It is for the court of law to take care of that, Cachar SP Diganta Bora told The Indian Express.
He,however, admitted that the police have been looking for her. Naths husband lodged an FIR at Silchar police station on May 22,alleging she was kidnapped by some unknown persons and requested the police to find her, Bora said.
The police initially traced her mobile phone to nearby Hailakandi and Karimganj. Subsequently, her mobile has remained switched off, the SP said.
Naths driver and two bodyguards, the people who last saw her, have told the police she went to Silchar Medical College Hospital on May 22. There, she told them to wait in the parking area and went inside. When the bodyguards insisted on accompanying her,she told them she was seeing a gynaecologist, the SP said.
The police have also interrogated qazis Usman Ali and Nazrul Islam who allegedly solemnised the marriage. The qazis have flatly denied they performed any nikah for the reported marriage between Rumi Nath and Zakir Hussain, the SP added.
Nath is a second-time MLA from Barkhola in Cachar. She was first elected to the Assembly on a BJP ticket in 2006.
