Minor resists rape,stabbed in eyes
Uttar Pradesh Might lose vision in one eye; two cops suspended for negligence.
Even before the police could crack the case of an alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in Lakhimpur Kheri,a 14-year-old girl was beaten and stabbed in the eyes with a knife when she resisted an alleged rape attempt by two youths at Bhurpurwa village in Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday.
The victim,daughter of a labourer,is admitted to Kanpurs Hallet Hospital,and doctors have told her parents that she might lose vision in one eye.
On Sunday,the police arrested one of the accused,who was identified as Niranjan Yadav,while his accomplice Kuldeep was absconding. Niranjan Yadav told the police that he was a minor and had nothing to do with the incident.
The Uttar Pradesh government suspended two policemen,including Sub-Inspector Shiv Shankar Singh,for negligence. The policemen neither lodged an FIR promptly nor reported the incident to their seniors who came to know about it from the media.
The incident happened when the victim was returning home from the fields in the evening. The accused stopped her,dragged her to a secluded place and tried to rape her.
When she resisted their attempts and shouted for help,they beat her,stabbed her in the eyes and ran away,said her cousin Narendra Singh.
Hearing her cries,the villagers arrived at the spot and took Preeti to the police station which sent her to the primary health centre from where she was referred to the district hospital in Kannauj on Saturday.
The district hospital referred her to Kanpur where the doctors conducted a surgery on her eyes.
The police lodged the FIR on Saturday. SP Rajendra Singh said Sub-inspector Shiv Shankar Singh went to the spot for inspection,but did not inform senior police officers soon after the incident. A constable accompanied the girl throughout.
The SP said the other suspended policeman Fakhruddin was a constable,who was responsible for the delay in lodging the FIR.
Inspector Hari Das Verma of Gurushaiganj police station,where the FIR is lodged,said,The medical report of the girl states she was hit in the eyes with a blunt object and a sharp weapon. It does not mention any attempt to rape.
Hari Das Verma further added,We have information that the family of the victim and the accused had an old dispute.
