A week after the fidayeen attack in Lal Chowk,heavily armed militants attacked the Sopore police station twice within a span of 45 minutes on Friday morning. A policeman and a civilian died in the attack and five persons,including three policemen,sustained bullet injuries.
Eyewitnesses said the militants struck at around 10:30 am,hurling a grenade towards the Sopore police station. As police officials were inspecting the site after the attack,a group of armed men appeared and fired indiscriminately. The policemen returned fire,and the exchange continued for 20 minutes. The militants managed to escape after the shootout.
Two persons,including a policeman,later succumbed to their injuries at SHMS Hospital in Srinagar.
Explaining the sequence of events,the DIG,Police,North Kashmir,Abdul Qayoom Manhas,said: Soon after the first attack,the special operation group of police and the CRPF cordoned off the Teliayan locality close to the police station. Militants,who were hiding in the locality before fleeing from one of the lanes,fired on a police escort near the police station. Four policemen and two civilians were injured in the shootout. Later,a cop and a civilian succumbed to their injuries.
Of late,Sopore has been witnessing a surge in militant attacks. On December 30,militants killed four CRPF personnel on the outskirts of the Sopore town. Police suspect the militants have managed to regroup in the town and also created a network in adjacent neighbourhoods of Sopore.
