Self-styled home secretary of the Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) was killed in an ambush laid by suspected rival Kuki underground cadres in Champhai village at around 3.30 pm Saturday. The KLA leaders two-year-old daughter,who was shot in the stomach,succumbed to her injuries on Sunday.
Haopu alias Seikhohao alias Marvin,33,was ambushed in Champhai village between Sagolmang and Saikhul. He was shot dead when he tried to escape from the car. The police said Marvin was shot in the back several times. His daughter Joukim Kuki who was rushed to Shija Hospital succumbed to her injuries at 1 pm Sunday.
Marvin was travelling with his wife,daughter,nephew and driver towards Saikhul village when he was attacked. His five-year-old nephew Paominlien who was hit by a bullet in the left shoulder is out of danger. Driver Aleng Khongsai,24,was hit by a bullet in his right leg. The injured have been admitted to Christian Hospital in Dewlahland. His wife Nenei and her companion Valhing Khongsai were returning from Churachandpur district.
Marvin was picked up in the car from Imphal. His wife told the police that they were waylaid by a number of armed persons both in combat as well as plain clothes at a spot barely five km from the Sagolmang police station. The attackers had fired several rounds,she added.
While the attackers are yet to be identified,police sources said the Kuki outfit has engaged in similar factional fights in the past.
The KLA is the armed wing of the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) which is under a Suspension of Operation pact with the Indian government and the Manipur government.
