The Ministry of Home Affairs has received a fresh demand to declare Belgaum in Karnataka as a Union Territory. The states of Karnataka and Maharashtra have been fighting over Belgaum since Independence, where the latter insisted that Belgaum shall be made a part of Maharashtra on linguistic grounds.

A senior official said that efforts have also been made in the past to resolve the Belgaum dispute but proved to be futile. The state of Maharashtra has rejected the recommendation of Mahajan Commission which was formed in 1966. After a long standing dispute, the Maharashtra government filed a petition in the Supreme Court in March 2006. Home Ministry officials have so far washed their hands the Belgaum issue stating that the dispute is before the Supreme Court.
