Merkel to get Indira Gandhi peace prize

An international jury,chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,selected 59-year-old Merkel for the award.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be awarded the prestigious Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace,Disarmament and Development for 2013.

An international jury,chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,selected 59-year-old Merkel for the award,set up by the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust.

Announcing the award on the Gandhi’s 96th birth anniversary,the trust said Merkel is being honoured for her exemplary leadership in Europe and the world during the financial crisis and her stewardship of German economic growth.

Merkel,the first woman to be elected as Chancellor of Germany,has been a strong supporter of close relations with India. The trust said the joint declaration between Merkel and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh greatly strengthened the India-Germany relations.
