Meghalaya ILP demand: Groups call 24-hr bandh

Kharmawphlang said they will not let the state government weaken their agitation.

A week after the Meghalaya legislative assembly rejected the demand for introducing Inner Line Permit (ILP) to check ‘outsiders’ in the hill state, groups in favour of ILP have renewed their agitation by calling a 24-hour bandh Thursday.

Khasi Students’ Union vice-president Frederick Kharmawphlang said,“We have decided to resume the agitation to exert pressure on the state government to introduce the ILP system in Meghalaya.” Kharmawphlang said they will not let the state government weaken their agitation.

Though groups have been agitating since early September for introduction of the ILP system on the basis of recommendations made by a committee constituted by the state government last year,CM Mukul Sangma has rejected it.
