Maoists kill 60-year-old in Orissa,set bus on fire

Madkami was the father of a panchayat samiti member in Motu area,police said.

Two days after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told the State Assembly that government has successfully controlled Maoist violence in the State,the rebels struck in Malkangiri district,gunning down a 60-year-old man accusing him of being a police informer.

Last night,about 40 armed Maoists went to the house of Prabhakar Madkami,member of Manyamkonda panchayat Samiti Laxmi Madkami,in Malkangiri and dragged him out. Madkami was the father of a panchayat samiti member in Motu area,the police said.

He was taken to a nearby forest by the rebels and his bullet-riddled body was found along a jungle road on Friday morning,Malkangiri SP Akhileswar Singh said. A poster,left near the body,claimed that Madkami was killed as he was passing on information to the police and BSF.

In November this year,Maoists had gunned down a social health activist worker and a former cadre on suspicion of being police informer.

The latest incident came less than a day after Maoists abducted seven villagers,including a ward member,from two villages in Kalimela block of the district. A group of 30 armed Maoists on Thursday had abducted seven people from their homes in Chintalguda and Ramaguda villages. While three of the seven abducted returned by Friday evening,the fate of the rest is unknown.

Rebels in Malkangiri also set a bus on fire near Beheraguda on Friday. The bus coming from Balimela was stopped by a group of armed Maoists who set the vehicle on fire after asking passengers and bus staff to get down.
