For the first time,Maoists struck in the southern Orissa district of Nabarangpur, killing two persons who were allegedly extorting money in the name of rebels. Though the district is contiguous to Maoist-affected Koraput,it has remained free from rebel activity.

Nabarangpur SP Prafulla Barik said Baisakhu Bhatra of Umerkote block and Pradip Mujherjee of Telpani village in Jharigam block were shot on a deserted road at Timanpur village under Raighar block. The rebels left handwritten posters stating that the duo extorted money in their name.

The killing was executed by Maoist cadre of Narayanpur Division, read the poster. Narayanpur is a Maoist-dominated area in Bastar,Chhattisgarh. They have also threatened to kill many others who are collecting money in the name of CPI(Maoists).

On Saturday night,CRPF personnel averted a major disaster in Sundargarh district after they recovered a landmine beneath a culvert on NH 215 near Kamarposh. The landmine, weighing about 10 kg,was recovered during patrolling by security personnel and subsequently defused by a bomb disposal squad.

In Malkangiri district on Saturday,a personnel of the bomb disposal squad of Orissa police was injured while defusing landmines. The anti-Maoist force, comprising Special Operation Group (SOG) and Orissa police, found seven live landmines near Gobindpalli ghat under Mathili police station.
