Manned flight,not Mars,should be a priority,says ex-ISRO chief

It is only a very small payload with not very big scientific objective.

The Mars mission should not be a priority for India now. Instead, time and energy should be devoted to the human space flight programme, former ISRO chief G Madhavan Nair said Saturday.

“We should have concentrated more on qualifying the cryogenic engine for GSLV and make our manned mission initiative move forward,” Nair said. “Mars mission is not a big priority for us. It is only a very small payload with not very big scientific objective . We cannot say we can make an impact nationally or internationally with that.”

The Cabinet Friday gave the go-ahead to the Mars mission — a satellite that will orbit and study the red planet.

But Nair said the manned mission is the “immediate priority”. “Only Russians have an operating system. China went to the extent of creating a mini space. So,unless we give a major thrust to manned a mission,we will be left behind.”
