Former President Nelson Mandela of South Africa was hospitalized early Saturday to be treated for a recurring lung infection, the South African government said. It is the fourth time in less than a year that the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader has been hospitalized.
This morning about 1:30 a.m,his condition deteriorated, and he was transferred to a Pretoria hospital. He remains in a serious but stable condition, President Jacob Zuma said.
Comments from officials seemed to indicate this hospitalization was more serious than previous ones. An ANC spokesman told Britains Sky News that the party was prepared for the worst.
