Days after he was stopped from speaking against the government during a public hearing regarding the Jaitapur nuclear power project, local resident Milind Desai and 12 others were arrested by the Ratnagiri police on Tuesday for cases of rioting registered against them after an incident in December 2010.
Desai was arrested early in the morning from his residence and sent in police custody for three days. A resident of Mithgavane, one of the five villages protesting against the 9,900-MW nuclear power project,Desai had spoken against the government regarding the compensation amount likely to be given to the locals at the public meeting organised in Karel village in the presence of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on February 26.
His remarks angered Industries Minister Narayan Rane who asked him to not use words against the minister following which Desai cut short his speech and left the dais.
