Man who hosted fidayeen arrested

CRPF camp attack Pradeep Singh,a govt employee, drove the attackers to Srinagar; was held for money laundering 10 years ago

Jammu and Kashmir Police Saturday got their hands on Pradeep Singh,a 29-year-old sanitary inspector in the health department who had hosted the militants who killed five CPRF men at Bemina on Wednesday.

The Indian Express reported on Saturday that police were looking for Singh after he was named by Bashir Ahmad Mir,an ex-militant who allegedly helped the attackers cross the Line of Control in Uri. Mir was picked up hours after the shootout at the CRPF camp.

Singh, who is now posted in Tangmarg, was handed over to police by relatives in his native Baramulla on Saturday morning. He was taken to Srinagar and was being interrogated at the Jammu & Kashmir Police Special Operations Group headquarters. Police had raided Singh’s home in Kanispora in Baramulla town twice on Friday.

Sources said Singh had been arrested in a case of money laundering 10 years ago,and a case was registered against him at Gandhi Nagar police station in Jammu.

Singh, who knew Mir — a former militant from Uri who surrendered in 1993 and who was then allegedly cultivated as an asset by several security agencies — is believed to have hosted the two Pakistani militants at Tangmarg and then, along with Mir,helped them enter Srinagar city to carry out the attack.

Sources said Singh drove the vehicle in which the militants came to Srinagar.

Soon after the attack,on Wednesday afternoon,Mir had allegedly taken a third Pakistani militant,Riyaz alias Abu Talha,to the home of his brother in Srinagar’s Chattabal locality, introducing the militant as his friend from Jammu.

Riyaz, who had infiltrated into the Valley along with the two militants who were killed in the Bemina attack, was picked up on Thursday after Mir revealed his location to interrogators.

Riyaz is learnt to have revealed some important details about his entry into the Valley and his family in Pakistan to interrogators. Investigators went after Mir,a resident of Dachi village in Uri on the LoC,after finding a mobile phone and SIM,and some diaries on the slain militants.

The ongoing interrogation of Mir,Riyaz and Singh was likely to lead to more arrests, sources close to the investigation said.
