Mumbai Police late on Tuesday night arrested a 36-year-old man for allegedly killing his wife,a French national, hacking her body to pieces and storing them in a refrigerator to be disposed of later.

Madhumanti (32) was staying with her husband Girish Khote and their two-and-a-half-year-old son in a flat in Nakshatra Tower. She was a homemaker, while Khote did odd jobs.

According to the police,Khote, who is currently unemployed, had turned alcoholic. He wanted Madhumanti to give him money to start a hotel but she was not willing to do so. The victim had also threatened to leave him and return to France with their son, said police.

At 9 pm on Tuesday,Khote’s cousin Nitin Madre, who lives in Dahisar, approached the Golden Nest police and informed them of the crime.

Madre told the police that Khote had initially called him to his house at 2.30 pm that day. Khote met Madre at the reception and asked him to accompany him to a nearby mall. After buying kitchen knives, duct tape, napkins, cotton, detergent and other cleaning material,Khote allegedly sent Madre back and returned home.

At 9 pm,Madre again got a call from Khote, who allegedly told him that he had killed Madhumanti and wanted to dispose of the body. “He asked me to come home after an hour,” Madre told the police.

Inspector Dinkar Ingle said as soon as Madre approached them,he sent a team to the flat.

The team saw Khote sitting next to a severed leg in the bedroom, trying to wrap it with duct tape.

“Khote has confessed to the murder. However,he does not seem to be in his senses,” said Ingle.

At the time of the murder, the couple’s son was not at home,“Khote had sent their son to his mother’s house in Thane,” Ingle said.
