After a prolonged illness,81-year-old Gayatri Devi,mother of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee passed away at a state-run hospital on Saturday. She is survived by four sons and two daughters.
Gayatri Devi,who was suffering from age-related ailments,was admitted in the SSKM Hospital on November 25.
Mamata,who was in New Delhi,rushed back to Kolkata on Thursday night after she was informed that her mothers condition was deteriorating.
The Chief Minister had recently described her mother being the only attachment in my life. On a Bengali television channel two days ago,Mamata said: It is really sad to see Maa lying in the hospital bed,her eyes closed. It pains me to see her eyes closed. Whenever I went out of my house,I used to look at her smiling face before leaving. You all know I have no family; my mother is my only attachment.
