HRD and Telecom minister Kapil Sibal was recently spotted at an unusual event. He was present at the release of a book titled Luv U Mate by Dr Puneet Sethi. The book is described as a love story on Facebook with the message of love, peace and coexistence in the world and is themed around internet social networking. Why Sibal decided to lend his name and presence to the book launch puzzled many and the buzz is that Sethi’s friendship with the minister’s son may have got him to agree to the book release. Down the memory lane

Pranab Mukherjee is known for his elephantine memory which has often come in use for his party or colleagues. It was once again on display recently when the issue of wheat export came up for discussion during a recent meeting of the Empowered Group of Ministers on Food Security. With his party colleague and Food Minister K V Thomas firmly opposed to exports and Agriculture Minister and NCP leader Sharad Pawar pushing for it,the Finance Minister intervened and argued against Pawar — the former Food Minister — and in favour of Thomas. Mukherjee reminded Pawar that as the Food Minister,he had expressed reservations about the proposed food security Bill on the issue of availability of grains for universal legal entitlements. How could he then suddenly press for exports when the government remained committed to the proposed Bill? Mukherjee’s memory is indeed a formidable weapon.

One of them comes between 10 to 11 in the morning while the other turns up between 3 and 4 in the afternoon. The two sit outside his office window for a few minutes, drink some water and leave, without disturbing the minister. While his staff call them by various names,Ramesh found out the exact species they belong to — pariah kite. They have been coming after the minister started keeping a bowl of water outside his office window. Some other birds also come occasionally, but these two, some staffers believe one is male and the other female, are daily visitors.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED),responsible for investigating cases pertaining to FEMA and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act,is caught in a bind. After suspending one of its officials for shoddy investigation in the Hasan Ali case,ED officials are now struggling to defend charges of corruption being leveled against some of its officials by persons totally unrelated to the cases being probed the agency. Many in the agency suspect that these charges are the result of its recent probe into some high-profile cases such as the 2G scam and UP food grain scam in which some politicians have come under the scanner. But so far they have been unable to ascertain who is at work behind the scenes.
