The new alliance of Mulayam Singh Yadav,Lalu Prasad Yadav and Ram Vilas Paswan may have boosted their morale but it has spelt trouble for Ajeya Singh, son of former Prime Minister V P Singh.

Paswan’s LJP had fielded Ajeya Singh as its candidate from Fatehpur constituency. After announcing the alliance on Thursday,Paswan had said he would not field any candidate against the SP in Uttar Pradesh. “Yes,we are withdrawing the name of Ajeya Singh as the party candidate from Fatehpur,” confirmed Paswan on Friday.

However, ignorant of the development till Friday afternoon,Ajeya Singh insisted that he was the LJP candidate. “I stand as an LJP candidate from Fatehpur and there is no issue about it.” By evening, his statement changed to “I am contesting the election from Fatehpur. Right now,I am concentrating on the fight.”

The withdrawal of its candidate in Fatehpur by the LJP gave rise to speculation of a new liaison between ex-Congressman V P Singh’s son and the Congress party. Asked about it,Ajeya Singh said,“I am not averse to the Congress. If I get an offer from the party,I will certainly consider it.”

“The relations of the party had soured with V P Singh. But later, both were coming closer and today,if his son shows willingness to contest on a Congress ticket, the party would gladly accept him,” said a senior Congress leader.

Incidentally, the Congress has so far not declared its candidate for Fatehpur. There are reports that the party is considering the name of Vibhakar Shastri, son of Hari Krishna Shastri and grandson of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Vibhakar had,in the past, unsuccessfully contested Assembly and LS elections from Fatehpur.

This is the first time Ajeya is trying his luck in active politics from his father’s seat.
