The brother-in-law of an Indian engineer who was killed while trying to launch a suicide bombing attack on Glasgow airport in 2007,has been arrested by the NIA in connection with an alleged Lashkar terror plot centred around south Indian cities.
Dr Imran Ahmed alias Immu Bhai was arrested in Bangalore. He is married to the sister of Kafeel Ahmed, who died trying to ram an explosives-laden vehicle into Glasgow airport.
Imran has been named as accused No. 22 in the chargesheet filed in a Bangalore court in the August 2012 LeT terror conspiracy case spread across Hyderabad,Bangalore,Hubli and Nanded.
He is alleged to have sheltered Mohammed Akram,24,a Nanded resident, when Akram travelled to Saudi Arabia in 2011 to meet alleged LeT leaders of Indian origin to plot jihadi activities in India.
The August 2012 plot involved the alleged recruitment of radical Muslim youths for terrorist activities. Two of the 12 arrested in the case allegedly travelled to Pakistan via Iran with the intention of fighting western forces in Afghanistan.
Four of the 16 originally arrested in the case, including journalist Muthi-ur-Rehman Siddiqui and DRDO scientist Aijaz Ahmed Mirza, were set free after no evidence was found against them.
Sources said Imran was being tracked for over a year, and was arrested during a visit to Bangalore, allegedly on a fake passport.
Imran Ahmed is the husband of the sister of the two Bangalore brothers who were accused in the Glasgow airport bombing, a source said.
One of the brothers, Sabeel Ahmed, was arrested and released after it was established that it was his older brother,Kafeel Ahmed, who drove the jeep in the bombing attempt. A cousin of the brothers,Dr Mohammed Haneef, was arrested in Australia, but Australian police failed to prove allegations against him.
Following Imrans arrest, the NIA has seized materials including pen drives. The data collected from him is being analysed, sources said.
