Renowned lawyers, including jurists Fali Nariman,Anil Dewan, former Union law ministers Ram Jethmalani and Shanti Bhushan, have written to Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan, seeking a probe into allegations of corruption against a High Court Chief Justice, who is among the five names recently recommended by the apex court collegium for elevation to the Supreme Court.
The file in this regard is with the Union Law Ministry. We have learnt five judges have been proposed for elevation to the Supreme Court. Weve got disturbing reports about the integrity of one of the proposed appointees. We would like you to inquire into it and get it investigated before his appointment is notified, the letter dated September 8 says.
The letter adds,You will agree that the consequences will be far more serious if a person lacking integrity is appointed as a Supreme Court judge.
It is learnt that a group of lawyers in Madras High Court had also written to the apex court collegium, requesting it not to consider the judges name till an inquiry was conducted into the allegations against him.
This letter contains a list of allegations against the judge.
Some lawyers had also been given an appointment by Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily to discuss the issue. However, the meeting could not take place as the minister was called for a meeting by Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
When contacted, senior functionaries of the Union Law Ministry said the files concerning the elevation of the five CJs to the Supreme Court were under process. We have not been asked by the CJI or anybody else to stop the process, said an officer.
