UNITED NATIONS: Lakhdar Brahimi told UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Friday he was “honoured,flattered,humbled and scared” at the prospect of leading efforts to broker peace in Syria. Brahimi met Ban a week after agreeing to replace Kofi Annan as UN and Arab League envoy on Syria. “When you called me I told you I was honoured,flattered,humbled and scared. I am still in that frame of mind,” Brahimi told Ban.

NEW YORK: Former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette,author of No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden,faces threats to his life after his identity was disclosed by media reports. Several militant websites affiliated with al-Qaeda,including Al-Fidaa,posted Bissonnette’s name and photo and called for his “destruction”.

Kidney for US patient’s transplant put in trash

TOLEDO: A nurse accidentally disposed of a kidney from a living donor this month at a US hospital,and doctors tried unsuccessfully to revive the organ in what medical experts describe as a rare accident. “Human error rendered the kidney unusable,” University of Toledo Medical Center spokesman Toby Klinger said Saturday. Dr David Grossman,a County health commissioner,said the man had donated the kidney to his sister.

Romney says ‘birther’ remark joke,not swipe

Michigan: Mitt Romney was on the defensive after raising the discredited rumor that Barack Obama wasn’t born in the US and therefore ineligible to be president. Romney jokingly declared “no one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate” as he campaigned near his own Michigan birthplace. Romney insisted the remark was a joke and not meant to question Obama’s citizenship but it risked creating a row.
