Faizabad: A 40-year-old man allegedly murdered his wife and then killed his four minor daughters in Purakalandar area of the district,the police said on Saturday. Deen Dayal Tiwari reportedly had arguments with his wife,Siyalavi (35),on Friday night as he suspected her of having an affair. He then hacked her with an axe and later also killed his daughters,Smriti (10),Shruti (8),Garima (6) and Mahima (4),the police said. Tiwari has confessed to his crime,the police added.

Uttarakhand okays new mining policy

DEHRADUN: The Uttarakhand government on Saturday approved a new mining policy in order to earn more revenue through open bidding and end the stranglehold of the land mafia. In the new policy,the first right of quarrying on up to 5 hectares of land would be given to its owner and no individual will be leased out right for two areas,Principal Secretary (Industries) Rakesh Sharma said after a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister B C Khanduri.

Panna reserve gets tigress

BHOPAL: One more tigress was on Saturday sent to the Panna tiger reserve as part of the programme to repopulate the reserve. A six-year-old tigress in the Kanha tiger reserve was tranquilised early on Saturday and a radio-collar fitted in the presence of experts from the Wildlife Institute of India,Dehradun. The animal had been reared in a 15-hectare enclosure. With this,the number of tigers shifted to Panna from other reserves in MP has risen to five. Two tigresses,shifted since the translocation began in early 2009,have given birth to eight cubs,of which two died.

3 killed,1 injured in gas cylinder blast


Kannur: Three persons were killed and one seriously injured in a gas cylinder blast at an ice plant in Puthiyangadi in Kannur district on Saturday,the police said. The deceased were from North India. The seriously injured person has been admitted to the nearby Pariyaram Medical College hospital,they said.

Two Bangladeshi intruders nabbed

SHILLONG: Two Bangladeshi intruders were on Saturday caught by the Border Security Force in West Bengal and Meghalaya,BSF sources said. Md Nizamuddin (25) was caught with fake currency notes having face value of Rs one lakh at Chopra in North Dinajpur district in West Bengal. The other infiltrator,identified as Alim Uddin,was caught near Jaliakhola border outpost in Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya. Both were handed over to the police.

Close shave for Union minister Jena

Kendrapara: Several senior Congress leaders,including Union minister Srikant Jena and Orissa PCC president Niranjan Patnaik,had a close shave when the dais at an election meeting for Kendrapara Municipality collapsed here on Saturday. Nobody was injured in the incident which occurred when the leaders were addressing a meeting for the November-15 urban body elections,the police said.

One killed in Bengal clash

Malda: One person was killed and another seriously injured on Saturday when two groups of villagers clashed over area domination at Kaliachak in Malda district. The police said Mosayaj Sheikh (35) died while being shifted to a hospital with bullet wounds this noon at Mojompur village.
