Cyclone Laila weakened considerably on Friday and is likely to move towards Orissa during the next 36 hours. However,rains continued to lash coastal districts with squally winds touching speeds of up to 55 kmph. Power supply to 700 villages has not yet been restored while telecommunication lines have also snapped.
The Hyderabad Centre of the India Meteorological Department said there was possibility of emergence of the system over north Bay of Bengal. In that case,the system may intensify again over the sea. The deep depression over coastal Andhra Pradesh moved north-northeastwards and further weakened into a depression and lay centred over coastal Andhra Pradesh,about 100 km west of Kakinada, a bulletin said.
Minister for Revenue and Relief D Prasada Rao said 17 persons were confirmed dead while seven were missing. Several areas of Prakasam district which bore the brunt of the cyclone when it made landfall Thursday afternoon are still inundated. All main roads and several residential societies in Ongole,the district headquarters,are flooded.
