As Metro services on Thursday were seriously hit following a technical glitch in the overhead electrification line on the Gurgaon corridor,hundreds of commuters complained of lack of proper announcements leading to chaos.
Though they denied the allegation,Delhi Metro officials maintained that in crisis situations,it does take time for them to give exact directions to commuters.
Officials said that the public addressal system is two tiered automatic for general routine announcements and manual for crisis situations. Over 100 pre-recorded and pre-fed announcements are run on the Metro trains as well as at the stations,but during emergencies,there is a provision to switch to the manual system. Usually when there is a glitch in a train,pre-recorded emergency announcements initially ask commuters to keep calm. Following this,when the driver gets instructions from the Operations Control Center OCC,he takes over and makes announcements accordingly, said a DMRC spokesperson.
Station controllers who are equipped with walky-talkies also report to the OCC and apprise them of the situation at the stations,so announcements can be made accordingly.
Delhi Metro officials said that when the overhead electrification wire broke down near Qutab Minar Metro station on Thursday,they initially thought the rectification process would be completed by 9.30 pm. The issue was addressed by 8.22 pm.
