The CBI has claimed to have solved the murder of Bhopal-based activist Shehla Masood, but the probe into the murder of her alleged killer Shanu Olanga continues to hobble. This, despite the existence of a clear picture taken moments after the murder on a busy Kanpur street, and one of the two men in it having been taken into custody.

The picture, taken by a photographer of a local newspaper, shows Shanu Olanga lying under his motorcyle with two men carrying handguns standing over him. In the distance, traffic has stopped, and several people are looking on. The police have confirmed that the picture is genuine.

Shanu was shot dead on November 30,2011 near the Kanpur courts. In the FIR,his father Israr said Raees Banarasi and Sharif Dapali had killed Shanu over an old enmity.

Raees, who is involved in several criminal cases, was arrested in Varanasi in another case in January. He reportedly confessed to Varanasi police that he had killed Shanu to avenge his brother Naushad Kallia’s murder in 2006. Raees reportedly named three others,Guddu Bind,Sharif Dapali and Monu Pahari,as his accomplices.

Guddu and Monu are on the run; Sharif is in Kanpur jail.

“We will seek Raees’s transit remand to bring him to Kanpur for questioning,” investigating officer Inspector Rajeev Kumar said. Police said Raees had told them he is the man seen wearing a helmet in the picture; and the man is Guddu. Both pumped several bullets into Shanu.

Circle Officer Devesh Kumar Pandey said the photo is genuine. Inspector Kumar said Guddu is a resident of Varanasi, but not much is known about him.
