Police today claimed to have solved the murder of journalist Chandrika Rai,42,and his family in Umaria,saying he was involved in the abduction of a government officers son and was killed by his accomplices following a dispute over ransom which was not paid.
Four persons have been taken into custody in this connection. Police are still looking for one accused.
According to police,Anant,the son of Hemant Jharia,a sub-divisional officer with the PWD,was kidnapped in Umaria district on February 15. The kidnappers made ransom calls to the SDO,starting with a demand of Rs 5 crore and lowering it to Rs 1 crore. Two days later,Anant returned.
Police said while no ransom was paid,Rai suspected that his accomplices were denying him his share. He had reportedly threatened to expose them.
