To cut the 12-km road journey,a lower primary teacher in Malappuram has been swimming from his home to the school for 20 years.
Abdul Malik,a mathematics teacher at Muslim Lower Primary School at Padinjattumuri in Malappuram, swims even if the river is swollen. Malik joined the school in 1992.
For a year,I went to school by bus. I had to take three buses and the journey would consume one-and-a-half hours. A colleague suggested crossing the river, which would reduce the distance between home and school to one km, said 40-year-old Malik.
Malik uses the tube of a tyre to float. He leaves home in a dhoti and shirt. On reaching the river,he puts his clothes and lunch box into a plastic bag. Wearing a towel,he gets into the tube and rows with one hand while holding the bag over his head.
It takes 10 minutes to cross river Kadalundi. The school is two minutes away from the other side, Malik said. I have no plans to buy a two-wheeler. Swimming to and fro has made me healthier.
