A prime witness in the rape and murder case of a 20-year-old girl in Kamduni under West Bengals North-24 Parganas district died Friday after a brief ailment at a government hospital in Kolkata. While the authorities at R G Kar Hospital said that the man died of cardiac arrest, villagers from Kamduni suspect foul play alleging that he was beaten up by the police during a demonstration in Kolkata two days ago.
The man,who is also a relative of the Kamduni victim, was admitted to the hospital after he complained of chest pain and vomitting. He was declared dead by the hospital authorities the next morning.
The man along with other villagers and the brother of the victim,at the demonstration, were demanding a CBI probe and had blocked the road. While dispersing the crowd, police personnel allegedly resorted to lathicharge in which the victims brother was also injured.
While villagers claim that the girls uncle too had sustained injuries,he was neither admitted to the hospital nor did he complain of any injury.
He was the last person the victim had spoken to on the fateful day in June before she was abducted, gang raped and murdered. I have lost my most valuable support. He was not only my brother,he was like my elder son. He had always come forward to help us. I do not know how the case will go forward with the prime witness being dead now, father of the victim said.
