Juvenile arrests for rape hit a high

The previous year had seen 1,149 juveniles held for rape,according to Crime in India 2012 Report,just published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The number has jumped in these two years after being in the 700s and 800s in the previous four years. So has the number of juveniles arrested for abduction of women and girls. Having been below 400 till 2010,the count jumped to 600 in 2011 and 789 in 2012.

The country registered 27,936 crimes committed by juveniles during 2012. Though this was only 1.2 per cent of the total cognisable crimes (23,87,188) in the country,it marked an increase of 11.08 per cent over the 2011 figure of 25,125.

Madhya Pradesh topped the chart among all states in both kinds of juvenile crimes — 249 arrests for rape (IPC section 376) and 665 for kidnapping and abduction (sections 363-69 and 371-73). Uttar Pradesh (110) came second in the number of juveniles held for rape,and Bihar (75) second in the number of juveniles held for abduction of women and children.

Other states that figured high on the list of juvenile arrests for rape included Rajasthan (102),Maharashtra (89),West Bengal (86),Andhra Pradesh and Orissa (70 each),Delhi (57) and Assam (56). In the list of juveniles held for kidnap and abduction of women and girls,those following MP and Bihar were Chhattisgarh (64),Rajasthan (59),Gujarat and Assam (48 each).

Amid these highs of 2012,nine states and union territories registered no arrest of juveniles for rape. These are Chhattisgarh,Karnataka,Manipur,Sikkim,Andaman & Nicobar,Dadra & Nagar Haveli,Daman & Diu,Lakshadweep and Puducherry. And 11 states and UTs had no juveniles held for kidnapping and abduction of women and girls: Arunachal Pradesh,Goa,Manipur,Mizoram,Nagaland,Sikkim,Chandigarh,Andaman & Nicobar,Daman & Diu,Lakshadweep and Puducherry.
