Jharkhand DGP,Rajiv Kumar, has rolled up his sleeves and left for the forests of Maoist-affected Latehar district to lead an ongoing operation against the CPI(Maoist). He had left Ranchi late on Monday.
It is probably for the first time that a DGP is leading an anti-LWE operation. Latehar SP,Kranti Kumar Gardeshi, said the police have not yet come in contact with the Maoists during the operation. The DGP will lead a team that includes DIG STF Praveen Singh,Gardeshi,an SP of STF and a Commandant of state armed police.
The DGP said he had set a personal target of one operation a month. I am trying to be on the field physically for an operation, leading one of the groups. It is an attempt to see for myself what my boys go through, he said from an undisclosed location inside the jungles.
The team has been in operational mode for about 20 hours after starting late on Monday.
We started walking around 11 pm after taking a train. We walked till 3 am in pitch dark, he said.
The day was incident-free,but the team found a formidable enemy in the weather. We had to walk in sweltering heat,at almost 45 degrees. We were constantly drinking from the water bottles. There was a point when we worried that we would run out of water. I think these practical difficulties are something we have to factor while planning operations, said the DGP.
Rajiv Kumar, who took charge on February 28,had on March 12-14 taken part in a major operation in Gumla district. He joined that operation midway as part of his efforts to familiarise himself with anti-LWE operations.
