Silence engulfed house number 210,Sector 18,after the news broke. Home to parents of Lt Col Bikramjit Singh,this house became the point of collective grief.
As relatives and neighbours started pouring in,the officers parents were inconsolable. Bikramjit was second-in-command at 16 Cavalry Armoured Regiment,Samba,having moved there from Sri Ganganagar only a few months back. His body was flown to the Western Command,Chandimandir,this evening with his wife and daughter on the same flight. The cremation will be on Friday.
Bikramjit,an alumnus of MLN College,Ambala,is survived by his wife,Navneet Kaur,and daughter Ramneet,8. His father,Paramjit Singh,is a retired Army major. Bikramjit visited his parents in Chandigarh two months ago. I spoke to him two days ago and he promised to meet me in October, cousin Gurpreet Kaur said. He was a very loving and caring brother.
Bikramjit was a jovial person,intelligent and a brave soldier. He was full of life and used to take the initiative in everything, his brother-in-law Harpal Singh said.
He was like a son to me. Whenever he visited his parents,he made sure he took some time out for us also, Sunita Das,a neighbour said.
Ramneek Sidhu,another neighbour,recalled,He was a very nice child and used to play cricket with my son. My son liked him and used to talk a lot about Bikramjit.
P K Das,also a neighbour,said the entire family is very spiritual and down-to earth. His grandfather Sant Hari Singh was famous for the run-for-fun exercise at the Sukhna lake.
Earlier in the day,Chandigarh mayor Subash Chawla visited the family. The family has lost its only son and is shattered. The parents are in no condition to talk,his mother is very critical.
Brigadier R S Mann,Western Command,was with the family throughout the day.
