Egypts ultra-conservative Salafist Al-Nur Party has said it will back the Muslim Brotherhoods Mohammed Morsi in the presidential election runoff against Ahmed Shafiq,who served as prime minister under Hosni Mubarak.
The High Committee of the Al-Nur Party supports Dr Mohammed Mursi for president in the runoff, the party said on its Twitter account.
This came on a day the Election formally announced that Morsi and Shafiq were the top two finishers in the first round of voting held on May 23 and 24. The commission said Morsi won 24.77 percent of the 23.67 million votes cat while Shafiq got 23.66 percent. Leftist Hamdeen Sabahi finished third with 20.7 percent.
Al-Nur had backed moderate Islamist and ex-Brotherhood leader Abdel Moneim Abul Fotouh in the presidential race after their candidate Hazem Abu Ismail was disqualified.
