The CBI probe into the Ishrat Jahan encounter case has taken a new turn. The agency is now trying to confirm the nationality of two persons,Zeeshan Johar and Amjad Ali.
According to the CBI chargesheet, they were gunned down along with two others, including Ishrat,by the Gujarat police and the IB in a fake encounter in Ahmedabad in June 2004. The IB had said that Johar was Gujranwala and Ali from Sargoda,in Pakistan.
The IB has opposed the CBI move to probe its Special Director Rajinder Kumar and other officials, allegedly part of the conspiracy to kill the four. The CBI has named seven Gujarat police officers in the chargesheet and detailed the role played by Kumar and other IB officials. It said the probe against them is on.
The chargesheet does not call the four as terrorists but states that Ali was a militant. He had stated that he had come to Ahmedabad with a plan to commit a terrorist act at some crowded location there, the CBI chargesheet said. It states that Ali was abducted from Gota crossing on the outskirts of Ahmedabad by the Gujarat Police and IB.
He was confined at Arham farm house from May 26 to June 15,2004. On the day of the alleged encounter,he was taken to the scene of crime in a white Toyota Qualis, said the chargesheet.
The CBI claimed that Alis being a Pakistani national has not been established. We have initiated a probe to establish the identity of Johar and Ali but suspect that Zeeshan could be from J&K. CBI teams have been sent to carry out field verification on the identity of those missing from the valley, said a CBI official.
The CBI has found that Johar was abducted in the last week of April 1004 when he arrived at Ahmedabad. He was taken into illegal custody by the Gujarat Police and SIB comprising G L Singhal and Kumar. He was confined at at Gota farm house and was under audio tape by IB officers Rajeev Wankhede,M K Sinha,T Mittal where other Gujarat cops kept vigil.
The CBI said Ishrat and Javed were abducted from Vasad toll booth at Anand when they were travelling in a blue Indica car (MH 02 JA 4786). They were kept at Khodiyar farm house near Ahmedabad and at a later stage on June 13,2004,Zeeshan was also shifted from Gota farm house to Khodiyar, said the CBI.
